What Happens When You Taste Candy With Your Eyes Closed?

What Happens When You Taste Candy With Your Eyes Closed?

The Surprising Science Behind Blind Candy Tastings

One of our favourite things to say before every Blind Candy Tasting is this:

"This isn't just a candy tasting. It's actually a marketing experiment."

People usually smile, close their eyes, and assume we're joking. Five minutes later, they're questioning everything they thought they knew about candy.

Here's something we've learned after doing this for over a decade: we trust our eyes far more than we realize. Every day, our brains rely on colour, shape, texture, smell, branding, and past experiences to help us predict what something will taste like. Most of the time, all of those senses are working together so seamlessly that we never stop to think about it.

It's only when you remove one that you realize how much work it was doing. That's exactly why we love our Blind Candy Tasting experience. It isn't about tricking people. It's about helping them experience candy in a completely different way.

Seeing Isn't Just Seeing

One of the first things we ask participants to do is simply close their eyes.

Then we encourage them to really experience the candy. Feel it. Squish it. Notice the texture before taking a bite. Instead of relying on sight, they have to trust their other senses and, perhaps without realizing it, their memories too. It's amazing how quickly our brains begin filling in the blanks.

Think about how often you recognize a candy before you've even tasted it. You see a gummy bottle and immediately think cola. You spot an orange ring-shaped candy and expect it to taste like peach. A familiar colour instantly reminds you of blue raspberry or cherry because you've experienced those combinations so many times before.

By the time the candy reaches your mouth, your brain has already built a story about what it's expecting. When you remove sight, that story changes.

People suddenly realize they aren't just tasting candy. They're relying on touch, smell, texture, memory, and expectation to figure out what's happening. It's fascinating to watch because everyone approaches it differently, yet almost everyone walks away surprised.

Your Brain Loves to Fill in the Blanks

One of the funniest moments during every activation happens when someone confidently announces they have the flavour. Except... It's not correct. Then another answer comes, and they immediately start second-guessing themselves.

Sometimes it's cherry. Sometimes it's watermelon. Sometimes it's a flavour that wasn't even close to what they guessed. They're not bad at identifying candy. Their brain simply did what brains do best.

The moment someone feels a familiar shape, their mind starts searching for every candy they've ever eaten that looks or feels similar. Usually, the strongest or most recent memory wins, and before they know it, they're convinced they're tasting something that isn't actually there.

Nothing about the candy has changed. Only the information their brain had available. It's one of those moments where people stop laughing for a second and start reevaluating their whole experience.

That's exactly the reaction we're hoping for.

Why Does the Same Candy Taste Different to Different People?

One of the questions we hear all the time after a Blind Candy Tasting is, "How did they get something completely different from what I did?"

It's a fair question, especially when everyone is tasting the exact same candy. Here's something we've learned after doing this for over a decade: taste is incredibly personal. Yes, memory and expectation play a huge role, but biology does too.

You've probably heard of what we lovingly refer to as the "cilantro effect." Some people taste bright, fresh herbs, while others swear it tastes like soap. Neither person is wrong. It's simply the way their brain interprets certain flavour compounds.

The same thing happens with candy.

Some people are naturally more sensitive to sour flavours. Others notice sweetness first. Certain fruit flavours might seem incredibly bold to one person, while someone else barely picks them up. Then you add smell, texture, previous experiences, and expectation into the mix, and it's easy to understand why a room full of people can eat the exact same candy and describe completely different flavours.

That's one of our favourite parts of the experience. People quickly realize there isn't always one "correct" answer. There are simply different ways our brains interpret the same information.

🍬 Candy Science

Did you know...

  • Most of what we think of as flavour actually comes from our sense of smell, which is why food tastes so different when you have a cold.
  • Scientists now know the old "tongue map" isn't actually accurate. Sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and umami can all be detected across your tongue, although some areas may be slightly more sensitive than others.
  • Colour changes our expectations before we even take a bite. Studies have shown that people often describe identical foods differently simply because they appear to be a different colour.
  • Genetics influence how some of us experience flavour, which is why things like cilantro, black licorice, bitterness, and even sour candies can taste dramatically different from one person to another.

This Is Why We Call It a Marketing Experience

People are often surprised when we describe our Blind Candy Tasting as a marketing experience rather than simply an event activation. But that's exactly what it is.

Marketing influences how we experience products every single day. Colour affects our expectations. Packaging shapes our first impressions. Familiar branding builds trust. Even the shape of a product starts telling our brains what is about to happen. None of those things are bad. In fact, they're incredibly powerful.

Our Blind Candy Tasting simply gives people a chance to experience what happens when one of those influences disappears. By removing sight for just a few minutes, people become more aware of how much their other senses contribute to the overall experience. They start trusting their taste buds a little more and their assumptions a little less.

It's fun, educational, and often leads to conversations that continue long after the last piece of candy has been guessed.

It's More Than a Game

Over the years, we've watched coworkers cheer each other on, complete strangers debate flavours, and entire teams laugh over a candy they were absolutely convinced was one thing before discovering it was something completely different.

We've also watched people discover new favourite candies because they weren't judging them by colour, shape, or a flavour they thought they disliked.

One of the most rewarding moments is hearing someone say, "I always thought I hated insert flavour here." Then, after tasting it without knowing what it was, they discover it's one of their favourites. Nothing about the candy changed. Their expectations did.

That's a pretty powerful reminder, not just for candy, but for life in general. Sometimes, stepping outside of our assumptions is all it takes to discover something we genuinely enjoy.

Whether people experience our Blind Candy Tasting at a corporate event, a festival, or around their own kitchen table with one of our at-home kits, we hope they leave with that. Not just a handful of new favourite candies, but a new appreciation for how fascinating our senses really are.

The Bottom Line

Here's something we've learned after doing this for over a decade. The most memorable experiences don't always come from showing people something they've never seen before. Sometimes they come from helping people experience something familiar in a completely different way.

Our Blind Candy Tasting isn't memorable because people guessed every flavour correctly. It's memorable because they didn't. Because for a few minutes, they stopped relying on what they expected and started paying attention to what they were actually experiencing. And once you've experienced candy that way, you'll probably never eat it quite the same again.

We don't take your investment lightly. Whether you're looking for an unforgettable team-building activity, an interactive event activation, or simply a new way to bring people together, we're ready when you are.
