Why Nostalgia Is One of the Most Powerful Marketing Tools

What Candy Can Teach Us About Connection

Here's something we've learned after doing this for over a decade: the best marketing doesn't always start with a product. It starts with a feeling.

That's something we've had the privilege of watching unfold thousands of times through candy. At first glance, that might sound like an odd statement. After all, candy is just a sweet treat. But after years of creating candy buffets, running Blind Candy Tastings, and developing interactive Candy Persona experiences, we've realized that people rarely spend very long talking about the candy itself.

Instead, they're sharing stories. They're laughing about childhood memories, comparing personalities with coworkers, debating flavours they're certain they recognize, and discovering something new about themselves or the people standing beside them.

The candy simply becomes the reason those conversations happen. That's what great marketing does. It creates a moment people genuinely want to be part of, and then gives them something worth talking about afterward.

The Best Marketing Doesn't Interrupt Conversations. It Starts Them.

One of the things we love most about creating event activations is that no two experiences create connection in exactly the same way.

A nostalgic candy buffet usually begins with recognition. Someone spots a Blue Whale, Hot Lips, Gummy Worms, or Cola Bottles and immediately smiles. Before they've even reached for a piece, they're already telling the person beside them about spending allowance money at the corner store, buying candy after hockey practice, or the little treat they would get after taking back bottles.

What's remarkable is how quickly those stories spread. One memory sparks another, and before long, people who may have never spoken before are laughing together over something as simple as a piece of candy.

Our Candy Persona activation creates that connection in a completely different way.

Instead of looking back at childhood memories, people are invited to choose the personality trait that feels most like them. Each persona is paired with a carefully curated candy mix, and while everyone enjoys discovering "their" candy, the real fun begins once they start comparing results.

It's fascinating to watch. Friends immediately begin choosing personas for one another, coworkers debate whether someone picked the one that actually suits them, people who walked up individually suddenly find themselves standing together, comparing answers and laughing about how surprisingly accurate the candy mix feels.

The activation was never really about finding the "right" personality; it was about giving people an easy, natural reason to interact.

Our Blind Candy Tastings create connection differently again.

When participants close their eyes, they lose one of the senses they rely on most. Suddenly, colour, branding, and familiar shapes disappear, leaving taste, smell, texture, and memory to do the work instead. Watching people confidently identify flavours, only to discover they were completely wrong, almost always ends in laughter, curiosity, and a conversation about why they were so certain in the first place.

Although each activation works differently, they all have one thing in common. They give people something to experience together.

Why Nostalgia Is Such a Powerful Marketing Tool

People often think nostalgia is simply about remembering the past. We see it a little differently. Nostalgia creates familiarity, and familiarity helps people feel comfortable enough to engage.

That's one of the reasons nostalgic candy has such an immediate impact. Even if someone hasn't seen a particular candy in years, they usually haven't forgotten how it made them feel. One familiar shape or flavour can instantly bring back memories of birthday parties, family road trips, movie nights, school lunches, or weekend visits to the local candy shop.

Those memories are personal, but they're also surprisingly universal. Almost everyone has a favourite childhood candy, and everyone likely has a story attached to it.

When people begin sharing those stories, they're no longer simply interacting with an activation or a trade show booth; they're interacting with each other, and that's where the real value lies.

Marketing often focuses on grabbing attention, but attention is only the beginning. The experiences people remember are usually the ones that made them feel something, gave them a story to tell, or helped them connect with someone else. Nostalgia happens to do all three incredibly well.

🍬 Candy Science

Did you know...

  • Research has shown that nostalgic memories can increase feelings of social connection, optimism, and even generosity, making them a powerful tool for creating positive experiences.
  • Smell is one of the strongest triggers of autobiographical memory, which helps explain why certain candies can instantly transport people back to a specific moment in their childhood.
  • Interactive experiences are remembered far more vividly than passive ones because our brains retain experiences we actively participate in.
  • When people experience something together, whether that's laughing through a Blind Candy Tasting or comparing Candy Personas, they're far more likely to remember both the experience and the brand that created it.

People Don't Always Remember the Product. They Remember the Feeling.

One of the biggest misconceptions in marketing is that memorable experiences have to be elaborate. Our experience has taught us otherwise.

Sometimes the most memorable moment at an event is watching someone rediscover a favourite candy they hadn't thought about in twenty years, hearing a room erupt in laughter because an entire team guessed the same flavour incorrectly during a Blind Candy Tasting, or watching coworkers insist that someone absolutely chose the wrong Candy Persona because they know them better than they know themselves.

Those moments aren't carefully scripted; they're genuine, and that's exactly why they work.

Here's something we've learned after doing this for over a decade: people rarely remember every detail of an event, but they almost always remember how that event made them feel. If your activation sparks curiosity, laughter, nostalgia, or a sense of connection, you've already accomplished something much bigger than simply handing someone a promotional item. You've created a memory. And in a world where every business is competing for attention, memories will always outlast marketing.
